How a Super Over Works, Ball by Ball

When a limited-overs match that needs a winner finishes level, each side faces one extra over. The rules are short:

• Six legal deliveries per team. Wides and no-balls are re-bowled as usual.
• Each team nominates three batters. Lose two wickets and the over ends, however many balls remain.
• The team that batted second in the main match bats first in the super over.
• The fielding side chooses which end to bowl from, and one bowler delivers the whole over.
• Runs and wickets in a super over do not count towards a player’s career figures.

What if the super over is tied as well?

Then another one is played, and another if needed, until a team wins. This was not always so. The 2019 World Cup final at Lord’s ended with England and New Zealand level after fifty overs and level again after a super over of 15 runs each; England were given the title because they had hit more boundaries in the match. The reaction was loud enough that the ICC scrapped the boundary-count tiebreak later that year. Since then, repeated super overs settle it.

The IPL produced the best illustration a year later. On 18 October 2020 in Dubai, Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab tied their match, then tied the first super over on five runs apiece. In the second, Mumbai made 11 and Punjab chased it down. Remarkably, the afternoon game that same day, Kolkata against Hyderabad, had also gone to a super over.

How Markets Are Usually Settled When a Match Is Tied

This is where an ID holder needs to pay attention, because different markets on the same match treat a tie differently. The table shows the common practice on exchange panels. Rules vary between panels, so read the rules tab on yours before the situation arises.

A worked example

You back Team A at 1.90 for Rs 500 before the start, and separately take “Yes” on the tied match market at 40.0 for Rs 20 as a small flutter. Both sides finish on 176. The tied match bet settles as a winner at once: Rs 780 profit. Team A then lose the super over, so the Rs 500 match odds stake is lost. Net position: Rs 280 up on a match your team lost. Reverse the super over result and you collect on both. The tied-match price is long because ties are rare, so treat it as pocket change, not a plan.

Betting While the Super Over Is On

Few situations in cricket move prices faster. Match odds are suspended and reopened around almost every delivery, and one boundary can swing a side from 1.50 to 3.00. With a stream delay of several seconds you are usually looking at a price that the ball you are about to see has already changed. Unless your position was set before the tie, the sound choice is to watch. Keep stakes small in any market you cannot think through calmly, and a super over is the clearest case there is. IDs are issued only to adults aged 18 or above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a “super over betting ID” different from a normal cricket ID?

No. It is an ordinary exchange ID on a panel that lists tied-match and, when they arise, super over markets. You can get one through the same WhatsApp process as any online cricket ID.

Do all matches go to a super over when tied?

No. Knockout games and most T20 leagues use one. In a bilateral ODI, a tie may simply stand as a tie, in which case match odds are typically settled under the panel’s dead-heat or void rule.

Can a batter who was dismissed in one super over bat in the next?

No. If a second super over is needed, a batter dismissed in the previous one cannot bat again, and the bowler who bowled the previous one cannot bowl the next.

How often do super overs happen?

Rarely. A typical IPL season of more than seventy matches produces a handful at most, and some seasons none.
