Wettigo New ID
Wettigo New ID: Inside the Closed Online Market of Switzerland
Wettigo is a Curacao-licensed sportsbook aimed at German-speaking players. It is not connected to GameWinExch in any form, which means our desk cannot issue a Wettigo login to you or anyone else; the account we supply is our own rupee ID, opened over WhatsApp with UPI deposits. Since the brand courts the German-speaking world, it is a good excuse to look at the most unusual corner of that world. Germany and Austria get most of the attention, but Switzerland runs one of the tightest online gambling regimes in Europe, and its citizens voted for it directly.
A Law Passed at the Ballot Box
Swiss gambling is governed by the Money Gaming Act, the Geldspielgesetz. Parliament passed it in 2017, opponents gathered enough signatures to force a referendum, and in June 2018 voters approved it by a margin of nearly three to one. It came into force at the start of 2019. The campaign against it was led largely by youth wings of political parties who objected not to gambling rules as such but to one specific tool in the law: mandatory blocking of foreign websites. They lost, and Switzerland became one of the few democracies where internet blocking for gambling carries a direct popular mandate.
Only a Land Casino Can Go Online
The central design choice is simple. An online casino licence is not a separate permit that any company may apply for. It is an extension of a concession held by one of the country’s roughly twenty land-based casinos. If you do not operate a physical casino on Swiss soil, you cannot legally offer online roulette or slots to Swiss residents. International brands are therefore present only as technology suppliers standing behind names such as the casinos of Baden, Lucerne, Davos or Interlaken, which were among the first to launch sites from 2019 onward.
The logic is fiscal as well as protective. Swiss casinos pay a steep levy on gross gaming revenue, and most of it flows into the state pension system. A franc gambled on an offshore site contributes nothing, so the law was written to keep play inside the taxed perimeter.
Sports Betting Belongs to the Lotteries
Sports betting is not part of the casino concession at all. It sits with two lottery companies owned by the cantons: Swisslos, serving German-speaking Switzerland and Ticino, and Loterie Romande in the French-speaking west. Their sports products, Sporttip and Jouez Sport, are the only legal bookmaking in the country. Profits are distributed to sport, culture and social projects, which is why local sports clubs tend to defend the arrangement loudly.
For the bettor the consequence is predictable. A monopoly without competitors has little reason to price tightly, and the payout rates on Swiss sports bets have traditionally trailed what international bookmakers and exchanges offer. It is a milder version of the capped-payout situation described on our Winamax page about France.
How the Blocking Works
Two regulators, the Federal Gaming Board for casinos and the intercantonal authority Gespa for lotteries and betting, each publish a blacklist of unlicensed domains. Swiss internet providers must redirect those addresses to an official notice page. The lists began in 2019 with a few dozen entries and have since grown into the hundreds or more, since every blocked brand tends to reappear under a new address.
Three details are worth noting. The block is done at DNS level, the lightest technical method, and anyone who changes a DNS setting or uses a VPN walks around it. The law does not punish the individual player for doing so; the obligations fall on operators and providers. And there is no payment blocking comparable to what Norway or the United States attempted. The Swiss approach is a fence with a gate left unlatched, relying on the fact that most people do not bother to push. Our STSbet page compares the blocking tools different governments use.
Tax and Player Protection
The Act has a carrot alongside the stick. Winnings from licensed Swiss online casinos and the large lotteries are tax-free up to a threshold of roughly one million francs, while winnings from unlicensed foreign sites are taxable income in full. In rupee terms, a 5 lakh win on a licensed site is kept whole, whereas the same win offshore should be declared and taxed at the holder’s marginal rate. Licensed operators must also run social-protection programmes, and an exclusion imposed by one casino applies across every Swiss casino, online and physical.
Switzerland Beside Its Neighbours
- Germany opened licences to private operators under its 2021 state treaty but wrapped them in restrictions: a cross-operator monthly deposit limit of 1,000 euros, stake limits on slots and a central player file.
- Austria keeps online casino games as a monopoly under one licensed brand, while sports betting is regulated by the individual states and is comparatively open.
- Italy runs an open licensing system through its customs and monopolies agency with many competing operators and heavy advertising limits.
- France licenses online sports, horse racing and poker but no casino games, and caps payouts.
Five neighbouring countries, five different answers to the same question. Finland, which is now dismantling its own monopoly, offers yet another, discussed on our Snabbare page. There is no settled European model, and anyone claiming that regulation naturally converges on one design has not looked at a map of the Alps.
What an Indian Reader Can Take From It
India’s debate swings between banning and licensing, usually as if those were the only choices. Switzerland shows a third path: permit the activity, but only through operators with a physical presence, heavy taxation and a social mandate, and accept a leaky fence around the rest. Whether that suits a country of India’s size is another matter. For an individual bettor the more practical lessons are smaller. Monopoly prices are poor prices, so always measure the margin. Rules about who may bet where change quickly, so check the position in your own state. And whichever online betting ID you use, know who is answerable if a withdrawal goes missing. Our Interwetten page covers another brand with roots in the German-speaking market.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can GameWinExch open a Wettigo account for me?
No. We have no tie to Wettigo. Only our own rupee ID is on offer, and it works on our panel alone.
Is it a crime for a Swiss resident to use a blocked site?
The law targets operators and internet providers rather than individual players, though winnings from such sites are taxable.
Why can only land casinos hold online licences?
To keep online revenue inside a group of operators that already pay the casino levy and meet Swiss supervision standards.
Who runs legal sports betting in Switzerland?
The two canton-owned lottery companies, Swisslos and Loterie Romande, through their Sporttip and Jouez Sport products.
Does DNS blocking actually stop anyone?
It stops casual visitors. A determined user can bypass it, which is why the tax exemption for licensed play exists as an incentive.
