Sportbet New ID: Handle, GGR and NGR Explained in Rupees
A Sportbet-style new ID from GameWinExch is our own rupee betting ID, set up over WhatsApp and funded by UPI; the name is a search term rather than a company we represent, and nothing here should be read as describing any business of that name. Instead this page does something few betting sites bother to do: it opens up the accounting language that every operator, regulator and analyst uses, so that the next time you read that a company had a handle of 1,000 crore you know what that means for the odds you are getting.
Handle Is Not Revenue
Handle, also called turnover or amount staked, is the total value of bets placed. If you place 100 bets of 500 rupees, you have contributed 50,000 rupees of handle even if you finished the month having won money. Newspapers quote handle because it is enormous and impressive. It tells you nothing about how much the operator kept. A bookmaker with a 1,000 crore handle and a poor month could have paid out 980 crore in winnings.
Gross Gaming Revenue
GGR, gross gaming revenue or gross win, is handle minus winnings paid to customers. This is the number that resembles sales for an ordinary company. The ratio of GGR to handle is called hold, or win margin. A sports book typically holds 5 to 8 percent of handle over a year; a strong month can be 10 percent and a bad football weekend where every favourite wins can be negative. So a 1,000 crore handle at a 7 percent hold produces a 70 crore gross win. Casino products hold far more of what is staked because the money churns: a slot with a 96 percent return keeps 4 percent of every spin, but the same rupee is spun again and again, and by the time a player leaves the casino has usually kept 20 to 40 percent of what was deposited. The hold on deposits, not the hold per spin, is the figure that matters to the operator.
Net Gaming Revenue
NGR strips out the costs that scale with revenue: bonuses and free bets, gaming taxes and duties, payment processing, and in most reports the share paid to game studios. A company might report 70 crore GGR and 45 crore NGR, the gap being 10 crore of promotions, 10 crore of tax and 5 crore of fees. Affiliates who send players to a site are usually paid a percentage of NGR, which is why bonus-heavy customers are unpopular with them. Everything below NGR, staff, marketing, technology, is ordinary business cost.
Hold by Product
Where the house makes its money is visible once you compare hold across products, and the pattern is the same at almost every operator.
- Sports singles hold around 5 to 7 percent. Match odds on a big cricket game may hold as little as 3 percent because the market is sharp.
- Accumulators hold 20 to 30 percent because every leg carries margin and the margins compound. Books push accas for exactly this reason.
- Live betting holds more than pre-match, partly from wider prices and partly because in-play bettors bet emotionally.
- Slots and crash games hold 30 percent or more of deposits over a customer lifetime.
- Live tables such as baccarat and roulette sit between sports and slots, since the per-hand edge is small but the hands are fast.
Once you see that a casino customer is worth several times a sports customer per rupee deposited, the design of every betting app makes sense: the casino tab is never more than one tap away from the bet slip, and the welcome bonus terms steer wagering toward slots. The mechanics of that steering are worked through on the sticky bonus page.
A Rupee Walk-Through
Picture a small panel with 5,000 active customers. In a month they stake 20 crore on cricket and 8 crore in the casino lobby. Cricket holds 6 percent, giving 1.2 crore gross win. The casino holds 4 percent per game round but customers recycle each rupee seven or eight times, so 8 crore of stakes came from roughly 1 crore of deposits and the casino keeps about 30 lakh of that. Total GGR is 1.5 crore. Bonuses cost 20 lakh, payment rails cost 3 percent of deposits, and any platform fee takes a share; NGR comes in around 1.1 crore. Divide by 5,000 customers and the average player is worth 2,200 rupees a month to the house. That is the number a panel is thinking about when it offers you a 500 rupee deposit bonus, and the number behind the customer acquisition economics discussed on the FOX Bet page.
What a Bettor Should Take From This
Hold is the price of the product. A market with 3 percent hold costs you 3 rupees per 100 wagered on average; a slot lobby costs you 30 rupees per 100 deposited on average. Neither is a scandal, but you should know the price before you buy. Choose the markets with the lowest hold, which in practice means match odds on major cricket and football and the exchange-style markets described on the cricket exchanges page, keep accumulators for fun money, and treat the casino as paid entertainment. A reader who wants the same numbers from the operator side, including why hold is higher for the sharpest bettors than they think, can continue with the betting volume by sport page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Sportbet a company GameWinExch works with?
No. We use the name only because people search for it. Our ID is our own rupee product.
Why do bookmakers advertise handle rather than profit?
Handle is bigger and sounds like scale. Profit is smaller and invites questions from customers and regulators.
Can hold be negative?
For a day or a weekend, yes. Over a year a functioning bookmaker will always hold a positive percentage.
Does a lower hold mean a better site?
Usually a fairer price, yes. It does not guarantee the site pays out reliably, which is a separate question.
Is the hold the same as the overround?
Not quite. Overround is the theoretical margin built into prices; hold is what actually stuck after results and how customers bet.
Every number on this page is the house’s edge written out in rupees. Bet with money set aside for entertainment, and only if you are an adult.
